Azure Stack HCI is Microsoft’s hyper-converged solution that hosts virtualized Windows and Linux workloads and their storage in a hybrid environment that combines on-premises infrastructure with Azure cloud services. It is a new addition to the Azure Stack family
Azure Stack HCI is a world class, integrated virtualization stack built on proven technologies that have already been deployed at scale, including Hyper-V, Storage Spaces Direct, and Azure inspired SDN. It’s part of the Azure Stack family, using the same software-defined compute, storage, and networking software as Azure Stack Hub.
Azure hybrid services enhance the cluster with capabilities such as cloud-based monitoring, Site Recovery, and VM backups, as well as a central view of all of your Azure Stack HCI deployments in the Azure portal. You can manage the cluster with your existing tools, including Windows Admin Center and PowerShell.

Branch office and edge
Optimize expenses for branch office and edge workloads by utilizing cost-effective twonode clusters with options like Cloud Witness or USB drive-based file share witness. Lower costs are facilitated through switchless networking, reducing the need for highspeed switches and utilizing crossover cables between nodes. Customers can also centrally view remote Azure Stack HCI deployments in the Azure portal.
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)
Ideal for large-scale VDI deployments with RDS or similar third-party offerings as the virtual desktop broker, Azure Stack HCI clusters offer amplified advantages. These include centralized storage and enhanced security, streamlining user data protection, and mitigating the potential for data leaks.
Trusted enterprise virtualization
Ensuring reliable enterprise virtualization, Azure Stack HCI meets trust criteria with its native backing for Virtualization-based Security (VBS). VBS relies on Hyper-V to implement the mechanism referred to as virtual secure mode, which forms a dedicated, isolated memory region within its guest VMs. By confining security sensitive tasks to this isolated memory zone using specific programming methods, potential exposure to host OS-based threats, like kernel exploits, is significantly reduced.
Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
Utilize Azure Stack HCI to host container based deployments, boosting workload density and resource efficiency. It also enhances the resilience and flexibility of Azure Kubernetes deployments. With Azure Stack HCI, automatic failover of VMs as Kubernetes nodes occur during localized physical component failures, augmenting Kubernetes' inherent high availability that automatically restarts containers on either the same or another VMs.
Scale-out storage
Storage Spaces Direct utilizes standard servers with local drives, delivering remarkable scalability, performance, and availability. This innovation substantially cuts costs when compared with competing offers based on storage area network (SAN) or networkattached storage (NAS) alternatives. The approach includes innovative features like persistent read/write cache drives, mirror-accelerated parity, nested resiliency, and data deduplication, enhancing its value proposition.
Disaster recovery for virtualized workloads
Through an Azure Stack HCI stretched cluster, virtualized workloads seamlessly switch to a backup site after a primary site failure. Synchronous replication guarantees VM disk integrity for crash consistency.
Data Center consolidation and modernization
Refresh and consolidate aging virtualization hosts using Azure Stack HCI for improved scalability and make your environment easier to manage and secure. It's also an opportunity to retire legacy SAN storage, reducing footprint and total cost of ownership. Azure Stack HCI is an on premises hyperconverged infrastructure stack delivered as an Azure hybrid service. You install the Azure Stack HCI software on physical servers that you control on your premises. Then you connect to Azure for cloud-based monitoring, support, billing, and optional management and security features. This FAQ section clarifies how Azure Stack HCI uses the cloud by addressing frequently asked questions about connectivity requirements and behavior.
No. Azure Stack HCI is designed to handle periods of limited or zero connectivity.
While your connection is down, all host infrastructure and VMs continue to run normally, and you can use edge-local tools for management. You would not be able to use features that directly rely on cloud services. Information in the Azure portal also would become out-of-date until Azure Stack HCI is able to sync again.
At the minimum, Azure Stack HCI needs to sync successfully with Azure once per 30 consecutive days.
